Neo Chorio is one of the larger villages of Apokoronas with a permanent population of about 650 people. It is situated on the side of a hill overlooking the olives and orange trees in the lush valley below. There are also views of the White Mountains and Souda Bay from some of the village houses.
You reach the village by driving from Kalyves (5 minutes drive), via Armeni (2 minutes away) until you reach Neo Chorio. On the way in to the village there is a good Greek Taverna on the right of the road - which (surprisingly) holds a good quiz on a Friday night. An enjoyable evening if you like quizzes and great value if you order a meal.
You will drive into the village square which is, dominated by the huge Plane tree which provides shade in the summer for those sitting below sipping their coffees (possibly) whilst watching the world go by. If you continue driving, then in another couple of minutes you'll see Macheri.
Neo Chorio is a working Cretan agricultural village with a pharmacy, tavernas, bakery and mini market selling local fruit and vegetables. In addition there are a couple of good souvlaki shops.
It's a peaceful place to stay or live and is convenient for the coast and the highway whilst experiencing life in a real Greek Village.
