Vafes

The beautiful traditional Cretan village of Vafes is located at the foothills of the White Mountains 247m altitude, surrounded by lots of greenery.

This old inland village is a traditional settlement and although away from tourist resorts, it is just 4.5km from the lively village of Vrysses which is also the capital of Apokoronas municipality. Vrysses is a village which is open all year round and offers all types of amenities including super markets, post office, bakery, cafes, restaurants, police station, fire station, bank and many more.

The village of Vafes has a few traditional cafeneons as well as a couple of tavernas/restaurants which open for the summer season. There is also an ex olive oil mill which today functions as a Museum.

Another sight of interest in Vafes is the cave of Kryonerida which is considered as a monument as history says that in 1821 the Turks killed 130 of the villages' residents by suffocating them in the cave by fire. There is also the church of Agios Apostoles next to the cave.

Vafes is 37km from Chania and the closest beaches of Kalyves and Giorgoupolis are both within a 20 minute drive.
